Why Can’t We Get Along?
Rag & Bone
A runway show that ditches the runway and isn’t really a show
context
rag & bone is a brand known for pushing the boundaries of classic design, so it’s no surprise that the company unveils the fashion collection for each season with an innovative and artful experience. In 2018, rag & bone engaged SpecialGuest to create a unique unveiling.
collaboration
For the Spring/Summer ’18 collection, rag & bone and SpecialGuest produced “Why Can’t We Get Along,” a short film starring actors Kate Mara and Ansel Elgort, co-directed by French ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, SpecialGuest’s co-founder Aaron Duffy, and Bob Partington of media production company 1stAveMachine. The cinematography is by Darius Khondji.
concept
Inspired by the innovative work of Tony Hill, a legendary rig designer and artist filmmaker, SpecialGuest developed a concept that invites viewers to experience a new way of seeing not just rag & bone's clothes, but also the world around them. The film features five sculptural camera rigs that capture content in unique and unexpected ways. Mara and Elgort—along with dancers from backgrounds as varied as ballet, parkour, and YouTube stardom—move through the rigs and interact with them to showcase the rag & bone looks they wear. Throughout the film, an original track by Thom Yorke poses the question, “Why Can’t We Get Along?” The rigs are an answer to this question: Different perspectives are disorienting, but if we could see the world from each other’s points of view, maybe we would get along.
