Parisian Love
Using tech to tell a deeply human story
context
Google wanted to create its first-ever TV spot, to premiere during the Super Bowl (no pressure). The goal was to develop an emotional brand storytelling platform that was true to the product.
collaboration
We joined forces with the team at Google Creative Lab for multiple rounds of concepting and development before we landed on an Occam’s razor solution (in other words, simple is better).
concept
Instead of telling a grandiose story that vaguely ties back to the product, SpecialGuest used the Google interface to carry a simple but emotionally charged narrative.
“Parisian Love” is a story told entirely in search terms and results. Each entry leads to the next and unfolds a classic human romance: studying abroad in Paris, impressing a French girl, managing a long-distance relationship, and relocating permanently to start a family.
“Parisian Love” proved to be a national tearjerker and is still a major influence on Google’s style of storytelling. Ad Age called it “one of the best campaigns of the 21st century,” and Time put it on its list of the 19 Best Super Bowl Ads of All Time.
